The Beller Ties collection is a four-book set that holds a special place in my heart. These were the first stories I ever wrote—born during a particularly hard season of life when loss and change left me feeling exhausted and uncertain. Writing became my outlet. It gave me energy. Strength. A way to forget and focus all at once.
And it all started with Something So Beautiful.
Mary, the main character, shares so much of my temperament that writing her story often felt like holding up a mirror. As she faced her fears, I was confronting my own.
As the dedication page declares, my husband’s essence lives within the pages of that book. While writing, I often caught myself asking what he would say—or do—if I were putting myself in unnecessary danger. It wasn’t too hard to imagine his exasperation; I’ve triggered it often enough in real life.
And just as John Beller tries to explain to Mary throughout the story, his only goal is to keep her safe and happy. But what happens when two determined people fall for each other, and the secrets they keep are just as determined to tear them apart?
Something So Beautiful originally poured out of me as a 200,000-word tome—my first story, written from the heart and raw emotion. After many rounds of revision (and a lot of feedback from editors and agents), I trimmed it to about 95,000 words.
The cuts improved the pacing, but I’ll admit—changing the way I told the story changed its soul a bit, too. One day, I hope to rewrite this first book with everything I’ve learned since, blending my current style with that original spark. Of course, I’ll still keep the eerie, real-life-inspired moments that make Mary’s experiences so hauntingly personal.
